BRUSSELS, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Brussels-Midi station was closed briefly on Wednesday afternoon after gunshots were heard, the Belgian press reported.

The suspect has been identified but remains at large, according to Interior Minister Jan Jambon. He also alleged that there was no link with any terrorist group.

The Brussels public prosecutor's office confirmed that images captured by surveillance cameras' show that a suspect in the station's central hall fired towards the ground before fleeing.

Hearing the gunshots, the commuters began to panic which led to a crowd movement around the station.

The police, the army and a load of ambulances arrived on the scene within minutes, according to the Belgian newspaper "Le Soir".

Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties.

Shortly after the incident, a security perimeter was established. A ballistic expert was also called on site shortly thereafter to provide assistance and guidance.

After a temporary close, the station was reopened. All trains departing from the station have been resumed and the police intervention ended around 7 p.m., according to a public statement by Belgian transport companies Infrabel and SNCB.
