DUBLIN, May 19 (Xinhua) -- An annual event was held here on Saturday to pay tribute to the police officers who have sacrificed their lives in line of duty, Irish media reported.

Irish Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan, Acting Police Commissioner of Ireland's National Police and Security Service Donall O'Cualain were among the dozens of people who attended the event which was held at Dublin Castle in downtown Dublin.

Representatives of family members of the police officers who died on duty also participated in the event.

Addressing the event, Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan said, "We remember with pride the courage of those who sacrificed so much so that we may go about our daily lives without fear."

"It is appropriate that we take a moment today to remember those members who have lost their lives over the years in the service of others," he said.

During the ceremony, the minister read out all the names of the 88 police officers who died on duty and whose names are inscribed on a stone wall inside a garden of Dublin Castle.
