ADEN, Yemen, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's internationally-recognized government welcomed on Monday the United States' decision to designate Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a "foreign terrorist organization."

According to an official statement revealed through the country's Foreign Ministry, "the Republic of Yemen welcomes the decision of the United States of America to recognize Iran's IRGC as a terrorist organization."

"The U.S. move comes in the right direction for its upcoming positive impact upon security and peace in the region and world," the statement said.

The statement stressed the importance of this decision in "pushing the regime in Iran to change its behavior and stop its practices in destabilizing the region's security and stability interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries."

Yemen's government expressed hope that the U.S. administration's decision will lead to restoring stability in the region, calling on the international community "to exert more pressure on Iran in order to compel it to respect its obligations as a member state of the United Nations."

Yemen and the Saudi-led Arab coalition accuse Iran of aggravating instability in Yemen by backing and supplying Houthi rebels with weapons, which has been repeatedly denied by both Houthis and Iran.

Saudi Arabia is leading a mostly Arab military coalition to fight Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015.

The Houthi rebels have been controlling much of Yemen's north by military force, including the capital Sanaa since 2014.

Grinding into its fifth year, the war has killed tens of thousands of people mostly civilians, displaced three million and pushed over 20 million into the brink of famine.
